Age-Appropriate Content: What Fits When
A practical framework for deciding what shows, games, apps and channels actually fit your child's age, plus the settings that enforce it.
Content ratings on games, movies and apps are a starting point, not a guarantee. A "T for Teen" game can have a chaotic online lobby full of adult strangers, and a "PG" YouTube channel can sit one algorithm-recommended click away from something much more intense. Parents end up needing a working sense of what actually fits their child's age and maturity, not just the label on the box. This guide gives you a practical way to evaluate content yourself, plus the exact settings on major platforms that filter out most of what does not belong.
How to evaluate content yourself, fast
Common Sense Media (commonsensemedia.org) gives detailed, specific breakdowns of movies, shows, games and apps by category (violence, language, sexual content, consumerism) rather than a single vague rating. Checking a title there before a first watch or play takes about two minutes and is far more useful than the official rating alone.
For games, watch five minutes of actual gameplay footage on YouTube before deciding, rather than relying on the box rating. A search like "[game name] gameplay" shows you the real pacing, violence level, and chat environment far better than an ESRB label does.
Setting up device-level content filters
On iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Content Restrictions. Set Movies, TV Shows, and Apps to the appropriate age rating, and set Web Content to "Limit Adult Websites" at minimum, or "Allowed Websites Only" for younger kids.
On Android, Google Family Link lets you set content filters per app store, per browser (Chrome SafeSearch), and per YouTube experience directly from the parent's Family Link app under your child's profile > Controls > Content restrictions.
Get the age-by-age verdict for the games, apps and shows your child is asking for.
