Social Media: TikTok, Instagram & Snapchat
Age gates, private accounts, comment filters, disappearing messages, and the truth about "finstas".
The official minimum age on TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat is 13, but in practice a large number of 8 to 12-year-olds already have accounts, often set up with a birthdate that quietly lies about their real age. That gap between the rule and reality is where most of the risk lives. This guide gives you the exact settings to lock down each platform, explains what a "finsta" (fake or second account) actually is, and shows how to talk about DMs from strangers in a way that keeps the conversation open instead of shutting it down completely.
What "13 and up" really means, and why it matters
Age 13 is not an arbitrary number - it comes from federal privacy law (COPPA) that restricts how companies can collect data from children under 13 without verified parental consent. Platforms respond by simply refusing service to anyone who says they are under 13, which is why the sign-up screen asks for a birthdate rather than requiring proof.
Because that age gate is just a self-reported date, a determined 10-year-old can type in a birthdate that makes them appear 15 in about ten seconds. If you discover your child has done this, the calmest first step is not deleting the account in anger but understanding why they wanted it and deciding together what happens next.
Locking down each platform, step by step
Instagram privacy: go to Settings and privacy > Account privacy and turn on Private account. Then go to Messages > Message controls and set "Who can send you message requests" to People you follow, and turn on Hidden Words under Settings and privacy > Hidden words for both comments and message requests.
Instagram Family Center: parents can link their account to a teen's account through Settings and privacy > Family Center > Add family member, which unlocks visibility into time spent, who follows them, and the ability to set daily time limits.
