YouTube & Streaming: Safe Setup for Every Age
The real differences between YouTube Kids, supervised accounts, and full YouTube, plus profile-level controls for Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, Hulu, and Max.
YouTube is where most kids spend their unsupervised screen time, and it is also where the gap between "what a parent thinks their child is watching" and "what the algorithm is actually recommending" tends to be widest. The good news is that YouTube offers several genuinely different experiences depending on account type, and each streaming service has profile-level controls that go far beyond a single shared login. This guide walks through exactly which YouTube setup fits which age, how to control autoplay and recommendations, and how to lock down maturity ratings on every major streaming platform.
YouTube Kids vs. supervised accounts vs. full YouTube
YouTube Kids is a separate app built for children roughly under 8, with a much smaller, curated content pool and no comments section. Set it up through the YouTube Kids app, choosing a content level (Preschool, Younger, or Older) under the parent settings, which controls how broad the available content is.
Supervised accounts (formerly "parental controls in Google Family Link for YouTube") are the right fit for roughly ages 9-12: they use the main YouTube app and interface but apply content settings tied to your child's Google account. Set this up in the Family Link app under your child's profile > Controls > YouTube > Content level (Explore, Explore More, or Most of YouTube).
Restricted Mode, autoplay, and recommendations
Restricted Mode filters out mature content across the platform and can be turned on at the account or browser level: in the YouTube app, tap your profile icon > Settings > General > Restricted Mode, and toggle it on. On a browser, scroll to the bottom of any YouTube page and click "Restricted Mode: Off" to turn it on.
Restricted Mode can be locked so it cannot be turned off without a sign-in, which matters because otherwise a child can simply toggle it off themselves in a few taps. On a supervised or Family Link account, this is enforced automatically at the account level rather than needing a manual lock.
